Earth Month® 2023 – Water Now or Never

(YorkPedia Editorial):- Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Mar 16, 2023 (Issuewire.com) – The Earth Month Network has developed its theme for the 53rd Anniversary of Earth Month® on April 4th as ‘Water Now or Never.’ This is no coincidence as there continues to be a political entanglement over water usage, the protection of natural resources, and obtaining potable water through law and policy.

Congress is digesting over turning back the pages of the original Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948, and the Clean Water Act of 1972 as 33 U.S.C. Ch. 26 Sec. 1251-1389 to overturn the December executive ruling as to which “waters of the United States” are protected under the Clean Water Act; calling it overreaching. All while the Environmental Protection Agency is expanding protection of drinking water standards under the Act and 40 C.F.R Part 141-B  to reduce polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFASs to 4 parts per trillion.

This demonstrates that Congress is in want of allowing industries and the like to take land and continue polluting surface and groundwater while the EPA wants to protect our waters. “These are conflicting directions affecting human health. This is not a political issue…this is a matter of having clean potable water as a human right,” said Brad Follett, Founder of Earth Month and President of Earth Month Network.

“PFASs are human-made chemicals found in consumer products such as our food, and cosmetics and utilized by millions of Americans. These substances have been linked to thyroid problems, infertility, and several types of cancer, and can remain in our environment and wildlife without breaking down, they are known as forever-chemicals. There are 42 families and subfamilies of PFASs and 268 selected individual compounds, quite an expansive list of organic fluorinated substances,” said Follett.

There are two other chemical chains in need of being removed from our drinking water, Chlorinated and Fluorinated compounds. Chlorinated compounds have been found to mimic estrogen, kill good gut bacteria, weight gain, and cause hypothyroidism by the removal of needed iodine, and deplete your immune system.

Fluorinated compounds have health risks such as higher blood pressure, hypertension, skin problems, reproductive system, heart problems, joint disorders or immobility, cancer that includes the bones and teeth, damage to the myocardium, bone arthritis, irregular function of the thyroid glands, and even  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or commonly known as ADHD.

“The chemical Hydroflosilicic Acid is a hazardous waste byproduct in the manufacturing of aluminum and fertilizers. It has been injected into our drinking water for years as a fluoridation method and is now manufactured and used as Fluorosilicic Acid. Hydroflosilicic Acid has never been formally tested by the National Science Foundation under Standards 60 as to its health effects on humans, it is a time for change and protect our water” said Follett.

Follett at the helm of Earth Month is an Environmental Systems Engineer and former Professor of Practice, transcending into Environmental Law and Policy. For more information about Earth Month® and how you can help, go to www.Earth-Month.org
